What is a Panic Attack? Symptoms, Causes, and Coping Strategies

In the middle of your daily routine, a sudden wave of intense fear, the feeling of not being able to breathe, and a racing heart... If you have experienced this before, you might have thought, "I felt like I was dying." This overwhelming experience is what we call a panic attack.

Understanding Panic Attacks

A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear that triggers severe physical reactions when there is no real danger or apparent cause. They typically start abruptly, peak within 10 to 30 minutes, and then gradually subside.

Common Symptoms

During a panic attack, the body's "fight or flight" response is activated at its highest level. Common symptoms include:

  • Heart Palpitations: Feeling like your heart is racing or pounding out of your chest.

  • Shortness of Breath: A sensation of smothering or gasping for air.

  • Chest Pain: Tightness or discomfort, often mistaken for a heart attack.

  • Trembling and Sweating: Shaking in limbs and breaking out in cold sweats.

  • Dizziness: Feeling lightheaded or as if you might faint.

  • Fear of Losing Control: An overwhelming sense of impending doom or "going crazy."

Important Note: While panic attacks feel physically terrifying, they are not dangerous. It is simply your body's alarm system going off at the wrong time.

How to Cope with a Panic Attack

You can use these techniques to regain control during an episode:

  1. Deep Breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, and exhale slowly for 8 seconds.

  2. The 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique: Focus on 5 things you can see and 4 things you can hear to return to the present moment.

  3. Acknowledgment: Remind yourself: "I am having a panic attack, it is temporary, and I am safe."

Therapy and Treatment

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective, evidence-based treatments for panic attacks. Therapy helps you identify the catastrophic thoughts during an attack and build tolerance toward physical sensations.
