I am a
psychoanalyst and
psychotherapist who works with
couples and
individuals in both
Turkish and
English. I obtained all my psychotherapy and psychoanalysis trainings in Britain. I am a member of UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) and Council for Psychoanalysis and Jungian Analysis College in Britain.
Background and training:
I was raised in Istanbul, and moved to England in 1992, where I lived and worked in Oxford and London for 20 years. I returned to Istanbul in late 2012 and started working at the Face to Face Therapia centre at Levent in Istanbul. Although I am influenced by
phenomenological and
philosophical thinking, my practice is largely based on psychoanalytic psychotherapy and
psychoanalysis.
I trained in Psychoanalysis/Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with the
Philadelphia Association (
www.philadelphia-association.org.uk) in Hampstead, London. The Philadelphia Association was founded by
R. D. Laing and his colleagues in the 1960s. R. D. Laing became well known for his lectures and books, which questioned the medical understanding and treatment of mental health and psychosis in society and the world of psychiatry. The Philadelphia Association continues to teach and practice in this tradition.
I obtained my master's degree at Birkbeck College, London University. My dissertation included a field study of a group of men from an ethnic community. Drawing on psychoanalysis, it explored the ways in which masculinity is constructed in our society.
Approach: My role as a therapist is to help my clients better understand themselves and their unconscious emotional conflicts. In therapy we gain self-knowledge and self-awareness; for me,
psychotherapy is a way to free people from destructive
patterns of behaviour rooted in the past. These were formed when they were the best available response to emotionally or physically damaging situations. But in later years (usually adulthood), these early patterns of behaviour can become liabilities, restricting our psychological growth, freedom and ability to find emotionally satisfying relationships. My work involves helping people to separate their deep-rooted desires from these constraints, and in doing so, enabling them to live more creative and authentic lives. We spend so much of our time worrying about what other people think of us, and this stops us from pursuing what really matters to us.
Psychotherapy can help us find a different and more satisfying way of approaching life. It's a process that enables us to be true to ourselves and to stop trying to please others.
I work with both
adults and
adolescents and have a special interest in
relationships and issues around
sexuality. In my work with couples, I have observed that partners can accept and love each other more fully and resolve conflicts more easily when they come to understand themselves and each other better. I have extensive clinical experience which includes working with people who suffer from
anxiety, depression, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive behaviour and schizophrenia. I also use
EMDR (
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) in the treatment of
trauma.
I give supervision in psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic psychotherapy to psychotherapy students.
